Reviews for The Chains: The Beatles of El Paso:
Record Collector - Top 10 Psych Reissues of 2006
Jon 'Mojo' Mills / Record Collector - **** ˝ - "The visceral garage punk of 'It's A Shame' is an absolute monster, but the band were also no slouches when it came to soft-psych and hard pop/power pop either (the 1968 side 'Has Anyone Seen My Friend' should have reached the same giddy heights as The Three Dog Night). Incredibly good."
Misty Lane - "'It's AShame' might be their most known garage composition but consider that this album contains the band's...complete output including never before released demos and acetates. Don't let the title confuse you. The Chains had very little in common with The Fab Four except that they might have become huge instead of following the usual garage band destiny, but luckily now we have this fab (did I mention the great full cover informative booklet?) release to enjoy them!"
Goran Obradovic / POPISM - "Considering label owner Mike Dugo’s researching qualities, as well the high-quality packaging of the label’s debut release, 60sgaragebands.com's new found activity is bound to take serious part in future ‘60s re-releases."
Will Shade / Ugly Things - "The Chains' Tor Pinney knows his way around hooks like a fisherman at a tackle shop.
"Mike Dugo's debut release on his new label 60sgaragebands.com... highly, highly recommended, folks! The stuff from '67 is a blast from the get go...the later stuff - '68 & '69 - isn't usually quite my cup of tea...a bit heavier and, er, funkier...but it's grown on me over the last few days...(It's) easily the best rock 'n' roll reissue I've heard this year so far - not that I've heard everything reissued to date, but even then I'd promise this would still be a contender..."
Tom Kirby, Drummer for Tonto & The Renegades - "I can't come up with enough good words to say about this CD. I highly recommend it. The packaging is superb. The booklet is full of info about and from these guys and the pictures are top notch as well. But, the main reason to pick this up is, this band is absolutely FANTASTIC. I'm surprised they didn't become a household name like some of the others. Everything about this 20 track CD is awesome. The drumming, the guitar work (both lead/rhythm and bass) and the Hammond organ on here. And man, I can't leave out the vocals. For some reason the Chains are touted as "The Beatles of El Paso", but they really don't have a Beatles sound. Maybe they are compared to the Beatles just because they're so damn good. This is all the same basic band lineup throughout with minor changes, so it is different than a comp of all those different bands, but even my wife and kids like listening to this one. Again, I can't say enough good things about this band and CD."

Initially gaining a modicum of fame in their home state of New York with the east coast surf/rock group The Dolphins, Roy and Tor Pinney eventually relocated to Texas and (both separately and together) found much greater success with The Chains, whose version of “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore” was a regional smash. Referred to as “The Beatles of El Paso,” The Chains recorded four singles – all examples of 1960’s garage rock at its finest. This first ever compilation of the Pinney brothers’ ‘60’s music includes all of the 45s released by The Dolphins and The Chains as well as many never-before-heard and previously unreleased demos and acetates – along with additional bonus tracks that represent the earliest musical highlights of two very talented brothers.

The new 60sgaragebands.com CD label is dedicated to preserving the music of the thousands of groups that proliferated in every town, village, and city of the United States throughout the 1960's. Whether these groups briefly scraped the bottom of the national charts - or whether they recorded only a handful of singles that went unnoticed outside their hometown - each, in their own way, contributed to rock and roll history. Therefore, just as our website's mission statement reads, our label's main goal is to spotlight the groups that were able to break out locally and regionally - but perhaps not nationally. The sounds created by the era's "garage bands" may have emanated from their British counterparts (or, for certain others, from legendary bluesmen) but the better groups were able to build upon that sound - and even transform it - into an instantly recognizable and highly definable genre. The best of that genre will be featured in our exclusive and limited edition CD releases... |
