I first got interested in music by attending CYO and YMCA dances. The Coachmen was my first band, but we started out as The Emeralds. I founded the band in 1963, and most of the group attended Bay View High School in Milwaukee. The Coachmen consisted of Jim Kaminski on lead guitar, Ray Johnson on vocals, Leon Kleckowski on drums, Rick Pries on organ and me, Jeff Greenthal, on bass.

Jeff Greenthal Recalls The Coachmen
We were very English sounding and were influenced by The Beatles, Stones and Dave Clark 5. The Milwaukee scene was very busy and very competitive. We played all over Southeast Wisconsin at CYO dances, post-proms, high school events and weddings. There were very few teen clubs. We also competed the Journal Sent Jaycees Battle of the Bands against The Shags and Del-Fi’s.
Joe Barnier managed us but didn’t work well. We were too busy with school and had no interest in recording, and didn’t write any original songs. We broke up in 1967. The Coachmen enjoyed a great reputation, however, and had fun building it.
