The Gnomes
One of our all-time favorite “garage rock” 45s is Afton 1702 by The Gnomes (produced by Vic Faraci).  The top side, ‘The Sky Is Falling,’ is a somewhat haunting ballad that stays with the listener long after the song concludes; the flip, ‘Something’s Going Wrong,’ is a catchy teen lament.  Both songs were written by “Carpenter Sullivan”—too common of names to be able to dig too deep with.

What is known is that Afton Records was a Chicago label and a part of MS Distributing Co., so we can assume the band was from somewhere near Chicago.  During our sleuthing, we located a Gnomes band (based around the Downers Grove, IL area) that wrote at least one original that was recorded live during a 1965 battle of the bands at the Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove.  It’s an excellent Byrds-influenced song titled ‘Through Different Eyes.’  Although we do not have definite confirmation that it’s not the same band at perhaps an earlier period during their existence, we believe it to be an entirely different group.

We’ve been rather fortunate to track most of the bands whose singles have caught our attention, but The Gnomes have so far escaped capture.  Last time we checked, Mike Markesich of Teenbeat Mayhem had yet to track the group down either.  Here’s hoping the little bit of information printed here results in some leads.  In the meantime, enjoy one of the unsung classic 45s of the ‘60s.
