Creatures
I always enjoyed the "look" of the "cool guys" playing in bands on TV and of course I sang "street corner harmony" like most guys in the Bronx.

(November 2011)

I formed The Creatures in 1967.  The group consisted of me, Bob Zappier, in lead guitar; Richard Semigran on rhythm guitar; Ken Semigran on drums; Jeff Shapiro on bass; and Jay Minkoff on lead vocals.

We were influenced by the doo-wop sounds and of course by The Beach Boys and The Beatles.  Our sound was just like any other garage band from that era.  We sang through our guitar amps using Lafayette mics.

We played a few teen clubs in New York City and also church and high school dances.  We played many Sweet Sixteen parties and birthday parties for our peers.  We would play as far out as our parents would drive us.

We recorded a song called 'Shelly' in an obscure recording studio in Long Island City.  Our rhythm guitar player, Richard Semigran, wrote the song after his girlfriend broke up with him.  How typical.

Destination Sound, L-R: Ira Goldstein, bass; Ronnie Roach, drums; Bob Zappier, guitar; Jay Minkoff, vocals. Bob Mack, rhythm guitar, is not in the picture.
We all went our separate ways in 1968. My next band, Destination Sound, formed in 1968 and played until 1972. We were influenced by all music: Beatles, Stones and the British Invasion and we really got into the psychedelic rock of the late '60s. We played in night clubs in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and resorts in New York state. We never made any records. We all went our own ways in '72 but, what I hear from the guys, some are still playing. We were cool...hip...and had a large fan base that almost always showed up at our shows to support us. Wow. I miss those days.

My time with The Creatures was the best time because we got invited to all of the Sweet Sixteen parties, and it was a true musical learning experience for all of is.

I am still playing with a '50's doo-wop group in Phoenix playing the same songs I did when I was 15. Go figure...
