North Atlantic Invasion Force
"Songwriting for me, both then and now, seems to come from a place I can't put my finger on. My songs are influenced by the events of the times, both personal and social. I wrote songs back in the '60s about war and environment ('Dying In A Foreign Land' and 'Mask Covered Man').  Forty-five years later I find myself doing the same:  'Frozen On The Three,' 'Someone On The Radio' and 'Killing New Orleans.'"

George Morgio's first taste of success was as lead singer and songwriter for The North Atlantic Invasion Force (NAIF) in Connecticut in the mid-'60s.  After a thirty-five year haitus from writing and performing, he returned to his passion in 2004.  We asked Morgio some questions about his days as songwriter for The NAIF (track down Cicadelic's excellent but out-of-print The History of Garage Bands in Connecticut In The 60's: Volume I CD for most of the band's recorded output, including several unreleased tracks), but for information on his current recordings visit his website.

An Interview With George Morgio

60sgaragebands.com (60s): You were the primary songwriter for The North Atlantic Invasion Force.  Did others in the group--or other outside writers--contribute, or did you primarily compose the songs alone?
George Morgio (GM): I composed all the songs except 'I Won't Be Back,' which I co-wrote with the lead guitarist, Nick Tirozzi. The arrangements were a collaboration with all the members of the band.

60s: How prolific of a songwriter were you during the NAIF years?
GM: I wrote a lot back in the NAIF days. We recorded many of them, such as 'Hangin' On,' 'Mask Covered Man,' 'Long Haired Bill,' 'To Find Myself,' 'Wednesdays,' 'When The Bluefish Flies,' 'In The City,' 'White Rain,' 'Mother Mary,' and 'The Leg Song'--some with the original members and some with alternates.

60s: Did you write many songs during that time that were not recorded?
GM: I wrote a number of songs that were not recorded. However, I did record some old songs such as 'Mask Covered Man' and 'Long Haired Bill,' along with some new ones, such as 'Everyday Blues,' 'Gotham Throwaway' and 'Someone On The Radio' on a solo CD in 2006.

60s: 'Black On White' has been compared to Billy Joe Royal's hit 'Cherry Hill Park' but your song was released first.  What did you think when you first heard 'Cherry Hill Park?
GM: 'Black On White' was first recorded in 1966. It's funny but I never got the connection between 'Black On White' and 'Cherry Hill Park.'

60s: Do you have a personal favorite of all the songs you wrote while with NAIF?
GM: My favorite song from the NAIF days was 'Black On White,' although I also liked 'Hey Woman.'

60s: Do often do you listen to your NAIF songs?  What do you think of today while hearing them?
GM: I rarely listen to our old songs but, when I do, they bring me back to good times and remind me of our loyal fans.
